Tosquias
Vem aí o Verão e com ele o calor. Olhe para o seu cão, coitado com aquele casaco…. Ficaria muito mais fresco sem ele, certo? Errado!
Muito erradamente a maioria dos donos tende a procurar um tosquiador para refrescar o seu cão neste época do ano, mas de facto o que acontece é que é apenas uma ilusão. O dono pensa que seria como se estivesse de casaco em pleno tempo quente, mas nos cães não funciona bem assim. Ora vejamos alguns factos:
#1 Os cães não transpiram!
A pele dos cães tem efectivamente na sua composição glândulas sudoríparas,mas estas são apócrinas (ou seja, sem secreção) na pele com pêlos. Apenas na pele dura das almofadinhas plantares e do nariz ele suam. Por isso não acontece como em nós, que nos sentimos mais confortáveis se tirarmos roupa quando transpiramos.
Mantenha a zona interior das patas sem pêlos e ajudará a manter o seu cão mais fresco.
#2 A pele tosquiada tem menos resistência ao calor!
Tal como a imagem ilustra, quando tosquiamos o cão, a zona com menos pêlo tem tendência a ficar mais quente. Isto acontece porque o pêlo, quando escovado e livre de nós, tem um efeito de isolante térmico, pela camada de ar que fica entre a pele e o topo do pêlo. Quando tosquiado, na exposição ao sol ou apenas ao ar quente, o cão tem mais dificuldade em regular a sua temperatura.
#3 Algumas raças ficam com sequelas!
Existem muitos tipos de pelagens, alguns específicos de algumas raças. E normalmente são as que temos ‘’mais pena’’ que são exactamente as que não devemos tosquiar. Em qualquer cão, rapar com frequência pode trazer consequências para a textura da pelagem (ou mesmo em pessoas, se rapar o seu cabelo a vida inteira, não vai esperar conseguir fazer uma permanente de um dia para o outro, certo?), mas nas raças nórdicas, primitivas e do tipo spitz, é onde vemos maiores sequelas,, pois a sua textura particular e pele que não é preparada para os elementos exteriores podem sofrer de alopécia por algum tempo e fazer uma termorregulação ineficaz.
No final, a decisão de tosquiar ou não o seu cão é sua, mas tome uma decisão informada, e não dê o calor com desculpa. Procure um profissional formado que lhe possa explicar qual a manutenção mais correcta para o tipo de pêlo que o seu cão tem, seja de raça ou não!

Summer comes and with it the heat. Look at your dog, poor in that coat …. It would be much cooler without him, right? Wrong!
Very wrongly most owners tend to look for a shearer to refresh their dog at this time of year, but in fact what happens is that it’s just an illusion. The owner thinks that it would be as if he were in his jacket in the hot weather, but in dogs it does not work that well.
Now let’s look at some facts:
# 1 Dogs do not perspire!The dogs’ skin actually has sweat glands in their composition, but these are apocrine (no secretion) in the fur with hairs. Only on the hard skin of the pads and the nose does it sweat. That is why it does not happen like in us, that we feel more comfortable if we take off our clothes when we perspire. Keep the inner area of the hairless feet and help keep your dog cooler.
# 2 The sheared skin has less resistance to heat! As the picture illustrates, when we herd the dog, the area with less hair tends to become warmer. This is because the hair, when brushed and free of knots, has a thermal insulating effect, by the layer of air that lies between the skin and the top of the hair. When shearing, in the sun exposure or just in the hot air, the dog has more difficulty in regulating its temperature.
# 3 Some breeds are left with sequels! There are many types of coats, some specific to some breeds. And they are usually the ones that have “the most pity” that are exactly the ones we should not shear. In any dog, shaving often can have consequences for the texture of the coat (or even in people, if you shave your hair your whole life, you will not expect to get a permanent overnight, right?), But in the Nordic, primitive and spitz-type breeds are where we see greater sequelae, because their particular texture and skin that is not prepared for the outer elements may suffer from alopecia for some time and render ineffective thermoregulation.
In the end, the decision to shear or not your dog is yours, but make an informed decision, and do not give the heat with an excuse. Look for a trained professional who can explain what is the most appropriate maintenance for the type of fur your dog has, whether it is a breed or not!
